The Value of a Life

A great (albeit fictional) man once said - "Human progress isn't measured in industry, it's measured in the value you place on a life, an unimportant life, a life without privilege".

With the political climate recently I've had more cause than ever to consider this line, and to consider how regressive humanity is becoming. In a land of isolationism and seclusion the selfish man is king, to spin off an old saying, no more apparent is this than in two of the most high profile nations on Earth, Britain and the Americas. On the far side of the pond they have a President who tweets like a teenager having an argument with his parents for the whole world to see and whose political "truthometer" rating is the lowest any politician has ever had there, and here in Britain we have a Prime Minister who has literally published a book with blatant racist remarks in it, is a self admitted adulterer and a proven liar.

I am consistently astounded that anybody born into an average, bottom rung life (basically anybody who falls within the 1st tax band here in the UK), would put their support behind these rich, elitist, privileged morons. How, in any sane world, can you truly believe that people who grew up with a silver spoon in their mouth, could have any hope of understanding the 99%? Let alone the drive, experience or know how to enact changes that will make any difference to our lives whatsoever. I'll give you a clue - they can't. You cannot hope to change anything for the better unless you know what needs to change - and these people will never be in the position of using a food bank to make ends meet, or keep up with the ridiculous demands of the Universal Credit system to make sure you get the next stipend.

And for those of you who sit there in your bottom rung life (and bottom rung it is compared make no mistake!), I ask you how can you be so willfully ignorant? How can you delude yourselves into being led by the garbage being bandied about on social media? It takes 2 seconds and a Google search to verify anything you read on Facebook - it takes 2 minutes and a few pages to verify anything you read in the mass media, this is not a hard thing to do, it is always, ALWAYS wise to find multiple sources to news, especially when it concerns who will eventually end up governing our country. The amount of fake news I found in the run up to the election beggars belief - and almost all of it was pro Conservative or anti Labour. It was without a doubt the most staggeringly obvious attempt at pulling the wool over the eyes of the electorate that I've ever had the misfortune to witness, and what's worse is, it worked! Aside from a few select individuals I saw, everybody gulped it down with their daily dose of "Get Brexit Done" like good little girls and boys.

The right-wing has always been and will always be "for the capitalists". It is a political leaning focused entirely on the economy and those who benefit it the most (guess what, that isn't you, you lower middle class prole). The left-wing has its roots in the working class, has always been "for the working class" and focuses on the people, to the detriment of the economy on occasion sure, but what's the point in a booming economy if the 99% don't see a god damn difference? That's assuming the right-wing succeeds anyway. I'd rather GDP drop by 1% but children living in poverty were given the opportunities so many of us take for fucking granted.

And that's the crux isn't it. Liberal and socialist values are demeaned and insulted in the media, down trodden by the rich and powerful - the excuse that "money doesn't grow on trees" serves only to line their pockets and brainwash you into thinking you'll suffer if they have to share the wealth, remember that. As any Star Wars fan will know "Those who gain power are afraid to lose it".

Humanity in the western world has regressed, despite the enlightened views that have slowly made headway in the last 20 something years. There is no shame or stupidity in believing that every human, no matter their beliefs or race, should be able to live a comfortable life, free of the concerns of poverty or sickness & injury - to believe otherwise makes you nothing more than a cruel and self-centered predator and you are everything that is wrong with the world today.
